A photographer who sees the in-between

Look for a way of working that notices hands, pauses and unscripted emotion.

While portraits and group photos are essential family records, the photographs that grow most precious over time are almost always the unscripted in-between moments: a father nervously straightening his cuff, hands clasped tightly under a table, or children whispering during vows.

When interviewing photographers, look past curated Instagram highlights and ask to see two complete full-gallery deliveries. Does the photographer capture the quiet emotional texture of the whole room, or only staged poses? Do they work with unobtrusive grace, allowing moments to unfold naturally without constantly directing?

A documentary-minded photographer captures the living atmosphere of your day so you can relive how it actually felt.

Your next step

Ask prospective photographers how they approach unposed family moments and low-light receptions.
